Tips for Building the Perfect Patio

  • Deep trenches: For a strong patio, you need to dig deep – about ten to twelve inches into the top soil so that you get the right depth for setting the patio. It is important that you know where the cable and other lines run below ground, so that you do not cause any damage. And here’s an additional tip, you may want to water the designated area, 12 hrs prior to digging into the top soil. The dampness should make it easier to dig and to remove the soil later.

  • Landscaping cloth: It is vital that you use landscaping cloth as this will prevent unwanted vegetation from shooting up through the paved stones. The landscaping cloth will act as a barrier between the soil and your patio and thereby prevent any encroachments from weeds and other plants alike. By using the right one, your patio should be weed free for a long time.

  • Choosing the right material: You need to decide which paving stones you are going to use for the patio or for that walkway. Remember, patio stones nowadays come in a variety of colors, styles and finishes, so choosing the right pavers for your design is an important one. In an event that you need to remove or repair the surface, you may want to opt for materials that are easier to use, easier to work with and especially easier to set into place. There are other surfaces to consider such as concrete or composite decking, but for aesthetics, maintenance and durability, paving stones get the top vote.

  • Create the perfect base: For a well-built patio, you’ll need a level base, and one that’s packed in firmly so that the patio stones do not settle over time. That is why, once you completed excavating your patio area and filling it back in with a ¾” crushed gravel, you’ll need to compact in the gravel using a tamper, spraying water over it as you run the tamper for high compaction. This helps to create a level base for you to build the patio on.

  • Make plans for drainage: Patios can trap or retain moisture in the ground, so it is important that when you build your patio, you gently slope it away from the foundation of your home. This should help prevent your home’s foundation from getting affected by all that excess moisture.

With these tips, you should be able to handle constructing your own patio with ease. However, if you are still not sure how to go about it, then you would be well advised to check out some Calgary landscape companies and consider hiring them to build you that perfect patio!
